PRESS RELEASE

Antipodean Theatre presents:

AN ELEPHANT
IN THE ROOM

(a comic fable)

by ROBERT GOUGH

"Ambition is but avarice on stilts and masked!"
- Walter Savage Landor -

THE PURSUIT OF ART... THE PURSUIT OF AVARICE...?
This age old dilemma continues to wrestle many a soul.

Set in contemporary Melbourne, this original Australian play parallels the lives of Lucy Hamilton, a young actress, and Wally Stern, a wholesale refrigerator salesman.  Both work diligently for a life less ordinary but neither is succeeding in their separate pursuits of Art and Avarice.

Indian elephant fables provide a subliminal chorus to this modern day fable as the lives of Wally and Lucy collide and collude.  Ultimately, it is the chaos and turmoil of their circumstances that bring them wisdom, solutions and success to their big life dilemmas.

Starring popular American-born stage and film actor, Bill Ten Eyck, An Elephant in the Room promises to entertain and surprise with its many twists and philosophical conundrums!

SYNOPSIS

LUCY is a young actress living in a studio apartment across the hallway from Wally's wholesale refrigerator warehouse. Lucy is waiting for her big break while Wally is presented with the deal of a lifetime.

To add to the intrigue, Wally has found a box containing an old 16mm projector and some reels of black and white film.  These turn out to be Indian elephant fables, and each fable provides the subliminal chorus for our unique tale.

In An Elephant in the Room, the lives of Wally and Lucy collide and collude as each discovers that the world does not necessarily reward good intentions.  Yet it is the chaos and turmoil of their circumstances that ultimately provide wisdom, solutions, and some surprising successes in their big life dilemmas.

An Elephant in the Room is an original Australian play written by New Zealand-born playwright, Robert Gough. Starring American stage and screen actor, Bill Ten Eyck, An Elephant in the Room offers local audiences a refreshing and entertaining night at the theatre with its lively dialogue and intriguing plot building to a surprise-filled climax.

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

Hi Everybody,

Bernard Shaw once said: "If you are going to tell people the truth, you better make them laugh.  Otherwise they will kill you!"

Our new production, An Elephant in the Room, is written for those of us who enjoy a wise comedy.  I've always been fascinated with fables and metaphors as they have the special magic and charm of discovery.

My favorite famous playwrights are fairly classical from The Bard to Stoppard, Sophocles to Shaw, Oscar Wilde, David Mamet, Howard Korder, David Hare and Harold Pinter.

I've also enjoyed so many nights at the theatre with the works of little-known playwrights performed by actors who should be movie stars.  It's a strange delight of our existence that some of the best works are appreciated by so few.

However, the theatre has been running a long time and we all love it and keep doing it!

Hope to meet you on the night... Have a drink with the cast...?

Best regards,

Robert Gough
